The Flying Dutchman is a former Olympic Class, and an excellent choice for sailors looking to sail a proven, exhilirating boat, with a fantastic history, that is still racing with big fleets regularly throughout the World, with the FD 2011 World Championships on Lake Garda (results) attracting 130 boats, and the 2012 World Championships in Santa Cruz getting just under 50 boats (results). This year's World Championships are being held in Hungary in May with another big fleet expected to fly around the beautiful Lake Baloton.
There could not be a better time to start sailing a Flying Dutchman Downunder - the Worlds will be on Sydney Harbour in January 2015. The Nationals in 2013/14 will be sailed on Sydney Harbour to get us all practicing at the Worlds venue.
The FD is a two handed monohull that remains one of the fastest, most enjoyable dinghies to sail and, as it is no longer an Olympic Class, the costs of buying and owning a Flying Dutchman are now significantly reduced, making it a truly affordable performance sailing dinghy. Have a look at the recently updated "For Sale" page to see which FD's are currently available to get you into the class and get sailing.
Check out the videos to get an idea of how great the Flying Dutchman is....you don't know how good sailing upwind can actually be.
If you want to find out what the Australian Flying Dutchman class is up to have a look at the News items or sign up and have a chat with other FD sailors on the Forum, they are a remarkably friendly bunch.....more amazingly not all of them are 8 ft Neanderthals....and FD's are not quite as intimidating to sail as you might think...
