I would be interested to know if existing or new owners of older, particularly wooden, FD's would race for a "Classic" trophy as a part of a travelers series and or as a part of State and National titles. Would a decent bottle of wine attract a fleet of classics to a start line?

Many of the older boats can be put onto the water and sailed in reasonable conditions without too much hassle. Such boats are ideal for new comers to the fleet as they provide a low cost entry to a fantastic sailing experience whilst providing a stepping stone into the class. There is something about sailing a wooden boat which maybe just a fun thing in itself, any thoughts and ideas please. Matthew Mitchell

Does anyone else have suggestions on what sailing people want to do?

For example, last season three of the WSC boats sailed most sundays leading up to the worlds. The training days were also popular. What do we want to do in Sydney this season? Having bought a new baot and planing to go to Crotia Pete and are are keen to sail as often as we can get out there.

The sail just has to fit inbetween the two points. A cut down is fine I guess but the balance of the boat in breeze will be a bit different. Just keep throwing rake into it until the boom is bashing the inside of the rear cockpit or you can get aqny rig tension. So I would suggest more clew hole in the jib and not a small jib to keep the balance of the boat in good order

FD Newbies

How did it go.
To update you on my previous request...

John (Helleconia) has kindly lent us a sail to try out, and it worked better than we could have expected. 25-30 official kts of wind, and a novice helmsan comfortable in control, pleasant cruising in gentler breezes. John has his own future plans, and the sail we borrowed would suit him, and therfore we are not keen on taking his sail , and are still seeking a sail for our Whitsundays trip.

So, if you are contemplating trading in your curent main, and upgrading for the next summer season, please get in touch.

Ian

PS. We have booked John in for his introductions to sailing at the end of the month!

Cruising in an FD

I've heard of people single handing FD's with a smaller jib (470?) it might be advisable to run a smaller main while you learn as well. If you have never sailed before I would probably do some lessons as big dutch girls can be a handful. Then after the course you should be able to get your instructor out for a sail to give you some pointers, also you might pick up some people to crew for you.

Dear FD sailors,

the FD Bulletin has launched a new international FD Forum. We will post articles and information form the Bulletin from time to time. The forum is also open to any discussion or FD related topic.

You can find it at www.fdbulletin.org

Warm greetings,

We have since had the CST fixed (sleeved at the break). We have been out in 30knots massive swells , swam hard, launched off massive waves off shore, stuck the nose in and have not been able to break the mast.It is a strong. Is competitive against the Euros and other masts? that is a different matter.

It would seem that the mast may have suffered damage in transit to Croatia ( as they lift things with fork lifts etc) so at some point it could have been damaged

We have been testing the high mod masts for a while now. Did the Nationals with a high mod mast a few weeks ago.

We will still do a little bit of testing in New Zealand before worlds and make some more decissions then as to how we think the new mast is going.

But at the end of the day, lighter, less windage, and stronger, reliable, is every ones goal. Its a matter of finding that balance.

<wfw:link>http://www.fd.net.au/DesktopModules/Forum/Forum_Rss.aspx?forumid=1&tabid=53&mid=369&threadspage=2</wfw:link>
