Does anyone have a feel for the angle of the leading edge of the rudder in relation to the keel band. I am new to FD's I have two rudders one is vertical the other is angled back a few degrees is there a best position or does it vary? Any thoughts welcome thanks Matthew

Hi,

I'm a FD newbie as well, so take this with a large grain of salt.

The only reference, I can find (Tuning Your Dinghy, Lawrie Smith) suggests raking the Rudder forward 5 degrees in heavy wind, 'This reduces the 'weight' in the helm making steering easier, particularly in heavy seas'

Have you thought of posting in sail Anarchy, very active forums there

Cheers,

John,

The rudders Mark Lindsay built, for what it's worth, are quite a bit staighter than the max aft rake given in the rules. He would have arrived at this optimum in colaboration with folks like Paul Foerster, Frank McLaughlin, Jon McKee, etc. I think they were looking for max depth first off, since they had the ability to rake the rig and the move the CB pivot to achieve helm neutrality, or desired weather helm.

I also have a cheap aftermaket rudder which is built with max aft rake, and I kind of like that because of the sculling power, not that I would ever do any sculling during a race, but it really does give a nice boost when turning into a tack.
