HI,I'm restoring an old FD,Yeah,i know, nothing new in that, but,I've never sailed before in my life.I was given the boat free,it was in a sad state, and i could not bear to see an old boat just rot away. Now,everything I've seen(youtube)or read, says that the FD is more like the F1 of yachts.I have never seen one sailing in anything but gale force winds, going flat out ,when all other sail craft have run for harbour.I would like to know if they can be sailed at a more sedate speed,or even treated like an ordinary yacht.Could i just sail it around with a friend or two?Sounds silly i know, but,,,I figured you guys would be in a position to tell me.

I've heard of people single handing FD's with a smaller jib (470?) it might be advisable to run a smaller main while you learn as well.  If you have never sailed before I would probably do some lessons as big dutch girls can be a handful.  Then after the course you should be able to get your instructor out for a sail to give you some pointers, also you might pick up some people to crew for you.

All the best

John,
